Alzheimer (2024)

The exhibition Seeste approached boredom as slowed time, dense atmosphere, and the imprints of bodies in space. Themes such as temporality, repetition, liminality, and rest connect to this exploration. The works and their installation highlight the shifting relationship between viewer and environment, inviting reflection on waiting rooms, corridors, thresholds, and domestic spaces.

Alzheimer is a conceptual video installation about memory. As heartbreaking as it has been to see my grandmother’s memory fade away during the years, I have also seen the depth of the mind revealing when it slowly empties. How it is constructed of layers, like curtains of time, with the things that have moved and brought us happines on them.

Seed Of Symbiosis II (2023)

The audiovisual piece is a study on the electrical activity of the Flammulina velutipes fungus and the visual diversity of the Finnish lichen species. With the intervention of Sulalampi, through digital sonification, the voltage fluctuation measured from the mushroom is transformed into a musical sound. The magnifying camera lens reveals excerpts from the microscopic reality of lichens beyond the limits of the human eye.

It is common to measure, translate and name the creatures and phenomena we encounter. Sometimes, in our efforts to explain the world, we forget that the objects have their own voice. Every environment and even its silent components have their own acoustic properties that we can become sensitive to.

The data measured on Flammulina velutipes, which serves as the inspiration for the piece, comes from a study conducted by computer science professor Andrew Adamatzky in 2021 (Creative commons).

By wandering in the land of lichens I found that they have a bright, clear voice resonating through the environments they inhabit. It is a voice of co-existence, collaboration, re-inventing and indicating. I am imagining a time, a landscape, when human actions have faded, where the lichens have evolved to a point that their structures do make audible sounds. Their majestical pipes and horns are howling in dissonances in forests and deserts and the eart vibrates. Water streams flowing through their pits and holes rushing and roaring. Rain drops resonating in their bowls. Marvellous polyphonic composition of these symbiotic beings.

Sulalampi’s ‘SOS III: Lost in data’ continues her interest in symbiotic relationships of different mediums. The work explores the electrical activity of fungi as compared to human languages and the effects of scientific naming on perception.

Restarting Awareness is an audiovisual piece performed with VR set by Sulalampi herself. In this piece the virtual world becomes the musical instrument. The sound with visual projection from the VR world and the kinetic movement of the performer composes the narration around the fantasy. The fantasy proposes a shared awareness between a computer and its user.
